We’re kidding ourselves. There will never be a slowdown. Ever. Saying “after this week, things will slow down a bit” is a big, fat lie. And it should absolutely NOT be part of adulting. Adulting is stupid and overrated because of this right here. Hmmph!!
Ok, thanks for rant. It’s true, though. Life ain’t about slow down after this week. As a matter of fact, it’ll probably speed up, pin us against the seat, create a g-force, maybe even break the sound barrier. Who are we trying to fool?
We better pump the brakes. Seriously. We better MAKE life slow down, release that rear parachute, and glide to an occasional halt. Think pace car, not race car.
I don’t want to time with my kids to fly by any more than it already has. I blinked, and now they’re 14 and 20. I don’t want to miss holding hands with my hubs. He had cancer and nearly died in 2015, so I know how important it is to savor every moment and try to make them last. I don’t want work to force me into the fast lane making my real life a blur only observed through a window.
Is this mid-lifey? Maybe. However, all should take note. We have to stop saying it. We have to stop accepting and normalizing that part of adulting is perpetually predicting that things will slow down after this week. I’ll even go so far as to say we have to stomp our foot, count to three, and demand it slow down. I mean… who’s in the driver seat? Us.
So slug me if you hear me say this ever again. And I’ll slug you if I hear you say it. We need to get real. Real deliberate about slowing down. I want “Driving Ms. Daisy” adulting not “The Fast & the Furious” adulting.
(OK, well maybe some “Talladega Nights” adulting thrown in just to keep it fun.)
