Things I learned today…

I worked all day. All. Day. But I really needed to. I try to keep all the plates spinning on the sticks, but if I turn to spin a few on this side (the house), a few on the other side (my work) start to wobble and fall off. Balance is hard.

My back still hurts. And it’s making me mad, because I’m scared of it. I’m scared of my freaking back. I know that if I happen to move ever so slightly the wrong way, it’ll be jacked, and I don’t want that. So I walk around in fear.

Nobody posts the ugly, do y’all know that? You do know that you’re only seeing the fun, the pretty, the vacation, the expensive meal, the school achievement. Nobody is posting the crying, the failures, the arguing, the overdrawn bank account, and the discipline problems.

Social media gives us the chance to be shiny and sparkly, smart and talented, youthful and wrinkle-free (Thanks, Filters!). It gives us a platform for seeking attention and praise. It gives us a chance to covet, too, and compare. Eek! Not all those things are good.

I mention all that only because, after a while, it just gets old. You know I’m always chasing the real and the substantive. I want that, and I want to be that.

Speaking of real…please play some real music for your kids. MAKE THEM listen to it. They won’t die. Trust me when I tell you that they need Motown and Blues and Crooners and Country and Hip Hop and all the things. Put on Classical, put on hymns, put on Salsa and Reggae. Get music playing in your house. All kinds. Expose your kids.

That’s all. We learn every day, don’t we?
